Sunday footy

We spent this afternoon at the football in Manuka.

It was fairly miserable - the temperature hovered somewhere between 7C and 10C, and it started to rain during the second half - but the cupcakes and coffee got us through ;0)

Needless to say we needed some of this when we got home! =)

If you're interested, I'll be popping a couple more pics up on flickr in the next few days =)

Friday evening

Mmm you know what's just the thing for a winter's Friday evening?
A big mug of super special milo - with marshmallows and Lindt dark drinking chocolate flakes on top (and yes, I did buy those mostly for the tin ;o))

Yep. We're wild party animals around these parts... =)

My Creative Space

This week I've spent some time getting creative in the kitchen.

I posted earlier in the week that I had made lemon curd, with the intent of using it to fill macarons. They use the egg whites, the curd uses the yolks - a match baked in heaven, right?

Well, almost - the curd was a bit too fluid on its own, but it did work pretty well with a bit of icing sugar mixed in.

Tonight I baked some shortcrust pastry cases to try out a curd based lemon tart.
These were pretty delish, but I wasn't completely happy with the pastry - so there's still a little more creativity to happen before they're perfect ;o)

When life gives you lemons...

you could always make lemon curd =)

After tasting the most gorgeous tarts last week I decided that I needed to find a good lemon curd recipe so that I could recreate the tasty little treats for myself at home.

There are heaps of recipes around - after a bit of reading I decided on this one.
It made exactly one little jar, and is just delicious.

I had planned on using some to sandwich chocolate macarons together, but I think it might be too runny...

Hmmm, on to plan B....

Chocolate Weet-Bix slice

Mmmm - afternoon tea visits both days this weekend has meant an excuse for a little bit of baking chez Kuka. I made this slice to take along to Brown Owls a few weeks ago, and had been meaning to post it here, so this was the perfect chance to snap some photos and share =)

I have no idea where this recipe came from - we used to make it often as kids and its hand written into my copy of "Cookery the Australian Way" (in fact, I seem to recall it being hand written into one of my mum's books too.) The recipe is a little bit special in that the main ingredient is Weet-Bix - that makes it healthy enough to have an extra piece, don't you think?

In a mixing bowl combine 4 Weet-Bix (or whatever wheat-based biscuit cereal you fancy), one cup of self raising flour, half a cup of sugar, a tablespoon of cocoa and 185g melted butter.
Press the mixture into a greased slice tin, and bake for about 18 minutes at 180C.

That's it!

Once its cool you can ice it - I used chocolate this time, but chocolate peppermint is also tasty! And sprinkles! =)

Enjoy =)

It's Tuesday, and I can't wait...

...for this little guy's head to get better!
You might just be able to make out a hairless spot over his left eye in the photo - he's had a nasty abscess there (courtesy of a wrestling match with Jinx, we think) which required surgery to drain it last week =(
I'm looking forward to it being all healed up - its too sad telling him he can't come in the bed for a hug on the chilly weekend mornings we've been having! =)

I'm also looking forward to finding out who won season 3 of Design Star (sorry, not game to go looking for links before I see who wins!)!! Tuesday night is interior design night on our telly, and I've enjoyed this show so much =) The final episode was actually on this evening, and we taped it, but it stopped recording before the winner was announced! BUM! Luckily most of the Foxtel channels repeat their shows a couple of times through the week, so we can record it overnight and catch up tomorrow!!!

Join in at Lou Lou's and let us know what you can't wait for this Tuesday!

I have to admit, I'm feeling quite the domestic goddess tonight - the floor is vacuumed, washing (almost) done, new blue water thingy in the loo, dinner for the next two nights prepared (lamb casserole - yum!), and we've just finished a lovely roast beef dinner (the left overs of which mean lunch for tomorrow is sorted too).

And, perhaps best of all, to accompany dinner we had fresh home baked dinner rolls! =)

I've been quite keen to do a bit more of this bread-baking business, and chilly, Sunday afternoons are the perfect time to get in some practice.

I baked these from Pip's lovely recipe on the Meet Me at Mikes::Recipes blog.

All the kneading was done using the dough-hook on my Kenwood Chef, while I stacked the dishwasher and had a cup of tea.
And the dough was just beautiful to work with.

The recipe says to split the dough into 3, then each third into 10 to give 30 rolls, but I split my thirds into 8 each - just because I prefer to split it in halves then halves, instead of trying to get 5 equal pieces.

Next weekend I think I might like to try something with seeds/grains.
Any suggestions welcome! =)

I heart cupcakes =)

I went on a little shopping expedition to Gold Creek in Gungahlin yesterday, and no trip there is complete without dropping into Cherry Seed Cupcakes.

We had planned on just popping in for a cuppa, but I couldn't resist bringing home these two - vanilla with vanilla icing, and chocolate with chocolate icing =)

I just love visiting Cherry Seed. Everything is baked on site in a little kitchen, just like at home, and is so fresh that the chocolate cupcake we shared over our tea was still warm, and the tea came in the most beautiful little pots. I'm not sure where they get the "freckles" for on top of the choccie ones, but they are just DELICIOUS!

I hope your weekend was full of cupcakes and sprinkles too! =)

Kitty quilts

Hurray! I've been sewing this week!
Some more little quilty bits!

Right before we picked up our guys I sewed them each a little blankie - polar fleece on one side and flannel on the other. They LOVE them, so when I heard my friend S had a kitty pair of her own I couldn't resist making up a couple more.

Last time I found the fleece a bit fiddly to sew, so this time I kept the fleecey side plain, and made triangley blocks on the flannel side.

I hope they love them as much as our guys do! =)

My creative space

I haven't ever played along with "my creative space" before, but every Thursday I absolutely love checking out all those inspiring spaces. This week I decided it was time to join in!! =)

I've been working on these squares for aaaaaages. About 2 years, actually - Mum and I crocheted away on them as we travelled around Europe together! I so love them - and feel bad about them sitting in a bag, so I'm keen to really do something with them!
I have a couple of ideas, but haven't completely decided yet - in any case I'm starting by measuring them all up and adding a round or two, to get them all to around the same size. =)

Just the thing for cozying up on the couch with a cup of tea!!!

ps. Kootoyoo is having a little bloggy holiday, but lot's of people are showing us their creative spaces anyway - like Michelle and Michelle and CurlyPops and Rachel. If YOU'RE playing along too let me know in the comments so I can come visit!
